Launch of Village savings and credit Association by Life water International
Life water international is an American Christian based NGO headquartered in San Luis Obispo, California implementing water and sanitation (WASH) program in partnership with Mayuge District local government in Busakira and Kityerera sub counties as part of their vision for a healthy village strategy.
In 2019, Life water launched a maintenance program called water works where water user committees collect monthly payments from every borehole guaranteeing regular maintenance and timely repairs . However there has been low response to this operation and maintenance model due to lack of income generating activities of the water users.
In consideration of the existing challenges encountered by the water user committees to collect payments from the partnering water points, Life water international plans to introduce a village savings and credit association (VSLA) in each community to enhance the finances of the water users to actively finance water sources operation and maintenance repairs.
These groups will be informed, trained and be supported with tool kits and stationary as startups.
